1. Wash your hands with soap and water. This is a good idea even if you're not using a neti pot, since hand-washing is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to avoid spreading, or falling victim to, germs.

2. Prepare the neti pot solution and put it in your pot. Basically, this is a saline mix consisting of purified neti pot water and neti-friendly salt. The types of water and salt (or special sinus rinse packets) can vary depending on where you live and your personal preference.

A quick warning: Never use tap water in your neti pot, because in very rare cases, this can be a fatal mistake. For popular nasal irrigation recipes, along with detailed instructions on mixing your solution, please see the neti solution-mixing page.

3. Go into the bathroom and lock the door, unless you want an audience.

4. Insert the neti spout/nozzle into your nose. Leaning over the bathroom sink, gently insert the nozzle of the neti pot into one nostril.

5. Tilt your head to the side, so the neti pot nostril is higher than the empty nostril.

6. Slowly, lift the pot until water starts to flow "up" your nose. It sounds weird, I know, but if you're doing it correctly, you'll barely feel it.

7. Breathe, through your mouth, that is! This is nothing like swimming, and you should be able to breathe normally the entire time. And in fact, you could carry on an entire conversation while using a neti pot, assuming you can find a willing conversation partner.

8. Go with the flow. Watch in amazement as the water starts flowing out your other (lower) nostril.

9. Stop, grab a tissue, and very gently blow your nose. When half the pot is gone (or the entire pot if you're going to use one full pot on each side), remove the nozzle from your nose, exhale and very gently blow your nose with a tissue as needed. Be careful to blow your nose without exerting too much pressure, to avoid sending fluids where they don't belong.

Here's the real question. How to use a neti pot and still look glamorous.

10. Repeat with other nostril. Some people like to use half of their neti pot solution on one nostril, then use the remaining solution on the other, while others believe that you need a full netipot on each side for your nasal irrigation to be truly effective. I've tried both methods with success, mostly depending on how congested I was at the time. (This means that if you're really congested, you might want to use one full neti pot of solution for each side.)

See, it's easy! And who said neti pot instructions had to be scary? And now that you have the basics of nasal irrigation, you're ready for some bonus instructions on how to use, share, and care for your neti pot.
